The Origins of Oris Watches

In 1904, Paul Cattin and Georges Christian bought the recently closed Lohner & Co watch factory in the Swiss town of Hölstein. After striking a deal with the local mayor and naming their new company after a nearby brook, Oris quickly became the largest employer in the area. Having been met with great success, Oris expanded in the following years, opening up additional factories all over Switzerland.

After the death of Christian, his brother-in-law, Oscar Herzog, took over as General Manager in 1928, steering Oris through the world of watchmaking for the next 43 years. Driven by ambition, Herzog was determined to improve the quality of the company’s designs, employing highly skilled watchmakers and working hard to reverse the Swiss government’s regulatory “Watch Statute” that prevented Oris from using lever escapements. In 1966, he succeeded, forever making a name for himself in Swiss watch history and unlocking a world of possibilities for future Oris watch designs.

The Monumental Release of The First Oris Diver’s Watch

Though it was previously well known for aviation wristwatches, Oris set a new standard in the industry with the debut of the “Oris Waterproof” dive watch in 1965. This timepiece featured large cardinal numbers highlighted with inverted lume wedges and a water resistance of up to 100 meters, making it the perfect accessory for recreational divers and underwater exploration. Oris has continued to release well-reviewed diver’s watches ever since!
